Way-Too-Early Predictions for John Cena and PPV’s Top Stars

SummerSlam is WWE’s August classic, and many fans are already looking forward to the big event. Much like WrestleMania, the groundwork is being laid ahead of time for SummerSlam, and everything happening now could have major implications for the August 20 pay-per-view.

Both brands will be represented, as Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live will bring their heavy hitters to the forefront.

The competition between the programs ramps up during big events, and that should especially be true at SummerSlam. Top stars like AJ Styles, Seth Rollins, and Kevin Owens, will surely be ready to impress when the event goes live from Brooklyn, New York.

But how will those stars, and others, be booked for WWE’s summer showcase?

    Aj Styles

    Aj Styles

The Phenomenal One had a brush with greatness at Money in the Bank.

That greatness did not come in the form of the ladder match he worked in. Nor did it come from the briefcase that dangled just out of his reach. The greatness came when he faced off against Shinsuke Nakamura in the middle of the ring.

These two legendary stars’ greatness is apparent and has been for quite some time. Fans familiar with Styles and Nakamura’s runs in New Japan Pro Wrestling remember what it was like when the two men clashed.

They made magic together, and it’s only a matter of time until they do it in a WWE ring.

That time could come at SummerSlam, when each man will need a top opponent. AJ is not in WWE title contention, and Nakamura has been treading water since arriving on SmackDown Live in April. There may be no better moment than SummerSlam for them to tear the house down.

    Shinsuke Nakamura

    But what about WrestleMania 34?

What better night to present Styles versus Nakamura? The Showcase of the Immortals is the night when legends are made and top stars show off in front of the world. Styles’ match with Shane McMahon at WrestleMania 33 was perhaps not what many fans wanted. Nakamura has not yet competed at the event.

They have a stellar history together. Why not capitalize on that and wait until 2018?

But the match could still happen, even if they face off at SummerSlam first. No heel turn is needed, and rushed booking does not need to take over. Styles and Nakamura know what they can do together, and they should do it for the first time in a WWE ring at SummerSlam.

    Seth Rollins

    Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins and Bray Wyatt will go to war at Great Balls of Fire.

The Man and The Eater of Worlds will collide on July 9, and that match could only be the start. Though Wyatt and Rollins didn’t appear to have any business together in the beginning, the two men are slowly but surely making the rivalry work.

Their paths will likely stay crossed until SummerSlam.

They seem to be just scratching the surface of what they can do together, so it will be interesting to see how WWE keeps them in the same space. Wyatt is not one to give in that easily, especially if he feels he’s gotten into the head of his opponent.

Rollins never backs down no matter how stacked the odds are against him. Both men are too stubborn and too full of pride to walk away.

    Bray Wyatt

If the company wants to keep the fans’ interest, then a gimmick match should probably happen at SummerSlam. Hell in a Cell would be a great option, though the pay-per-view of the same name is scheduled for October 22, so WWE may not want to book that match type.

Maybe an old-fashioned steel cage match would be enough to keep fans hooked. A Falls Count Anywhere, No Disqualification match could be a better option. Maybe the bout could be a Last Man Standing or possibly even a submission contest.

The question is, can Rollins and Wyatt maintain momentum coming out of GBOF?

If so, then it could be enough to keep them on the same page heading into SummerSlam. They’re both extremely talented, and they’ve both developed into top-notch storytellers. They will certainly give everything they have to get their match over on July 9, and the same would certainly be true of a contest at SummerSlam.

    Kevin Owens

    Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens may be the New Face of America, but he could be taken down by a man from out of nowhere.

Randy Orton is booked to face Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship at Battleground on July 23. Not only does the match supposedly favor Mahal because it will be held in a Punjabi Prison, but Orton is already fighting against the odds before the event even happens.

Orton is 0-2 against the WWE champion. If The Viper does not defeat Mahal, then he will likely move on to the next challenge. That means he will need someone else to feud with as WWE gets closer to SummerSlam.

There may be no better opponent than KO.

Owens is the United States champion, and his title is the only one in WWE’s rotation Orton has never held. That fact may not be at the forefront of storytelling now, but if the company brought it to light at the right moment, it could be enough to spark a new rivalry.

Owens versus Orton could be the match of the night at SummerSlam.

    Randy Orton

It’s a perfect pairing, mostly because of the role each man plays. Owens may be an entertaining heel, but he’s also vicious. He only cares about himself, and he will do whatever is necessary to win matches.

Orton happens to share that ideology despite the fact he’s a babyface. But as the months have gone by since WrestleMania 33, Orton has begun to come out of his shell.

He’s more approachable than he has been in the past. He looks more like a hero than he does a villain hiding behind applause. He’s more relaxed than he ever has been, and he seems comfortable in his role.

Fans would surely love to see that Randy Orton interrupt a gloating Owens in the middle of the ring.

Owens may lose the championship, which would add more fuel to the fire. He would be more outraged than ever, claiming WWE was out to get him and that he was constantly being targeted because of who he is and where he’s from.

He would dish out that vitriol and also direct it at Orton, who would be enjoying a run with the one title he’s never held. But it would all have to begin at SummerSlam.

    Brock Lesnar

    Brock Lesnar

Brock Lesnar and Samoa Joe will have a major showdown at Great Balls of Fire, and it’s so big that one fight will probably not be enough.

That means the rivalry will continue past July 9 and could go into SummerSlam. If that happens, fans will be treated to a second war between two of the industry’s toughest men. Joe versus Lesnar has the potential to be the match of the year for 2017, and a second one could top the first.

But they may be joined by a third man at SummerSlam.

Roman Reigns has a Universal Championship shot, and he will get it on August 20 regardless of the winner of the title match at GBOF. Assuming Joe comes out of his contest with Lesnar on his feet and still looking good, there should be no reason why their heat has to end.

Joe will not go down without a fight—and could win.

    Samoa Joe and Roman Reigns

Either way, a Triple Threat match at SummerSlam could be the best way to go. It keeps Joe in the title hunt, which is a good thing for him. It also keeps Lesnar and Reigns from having a one-on-one match until WrestleMania 34.

Fans may not be in love with the format, but the match would be a main event anywhere in the world.

Three of the company’s top heavyweights fighting over a championship that sorely needs some relevance that’s what would happen if Joe, Lesnar and Reigns came together. It’s a WrestleMania-caliber match, and it would be the headlining match at SummerSlam.

Fans want top stars in top matches with long-lasting ramifications, and that’s exactly what could happen with this booking.

    John Cena

    John Cena

John Cena is WWE’s resident superhero, and it’s a moniker he’s proudly worn for over a decade. Cena stands for what is right and never backs down from a fight. He battles with pride and power, both of which he has an endless supply of.

He’s the all-American man fans can always depend on. How convenient is it that the WWE champion is a heel of foreign descent?

It’s a time-honored card that’s been played for years in the business, and it almost always works. Jinder Mahal is the brash champion who is overly critical of a country he perhaps doesn’t understand. He’s cocky, and he always seems to know just how to upset the American audience.

This looks like a job for Super Cena.

Cena would not only cut a promo on Mahal; he would destroy him with it. In one spot, Cena could find a counter to every insult Mahal has ever laid on WWE, its fans and the United States. He may be the man that fans love to hate, but they also love him when he’s at his best.

He would be at his best when he verbally spars with Mahal. But what happens at SummerSlam?

    Jinder Mahal

It’s not a question of if Cena will break the record of 16 world titles he shares with Ric Flair but when. It’s a record WWE seems determined to give Cena outright, which means it will happen sooner or later. Considering Cena now wrestles on a part-time basis, it could well be the former.

What better way to spark SummerSlam than by booking Cena to land No.17? But what does that mean for The Modern Day Maharaja?

Mahal may be a short-term champion, but then again, he may not. No one seems to know where WWE is going with him or where he will end up by the time WrestleMania 34 comes around. But it seems illogical to build him up, give him consecutive wins over Randy Orton and then tear him down with one match against Cena.

Mahal could defeat Cena at SummerSlam.

If that happens, it will become clear WWE is serious about Mahal. But if Cena goes over, Mahal doesn’t necessarily have to fade away. It will be a delicate balance when it comes to the booking, which is something WWE fans are used to.

It looks set to be a very interesting summer.

Strowman’s Return Opens Up SummerSlam Possibilities

Roman Reigns announced his SummerSlam intentions on Monday’s episode of WWE Raw, and he told the crowd in a show-opening promo that he intended to challenge for the Universal Title at WWE’s second-biggest show of the year.

But the problem wasn’t that he just announced intentions. Instead, Reigns announced that at SummerSlam, he was the No. 1 contender for the title.

I’m sorry, but wrestlers shouldn’t be allowed to do that. In an era where wrestling companies are in love with authority figures, it looks foolish that a wrestler can just walk to the ring and anoint themselves No. 1 contender to a title, especially when there are two months between now and the supposed title shot.

Now, that doesn’t mean Reigns will challenge the champion at SummerSlam, but it might. And if it does, it could be a slight hint that WWE is re-thinking Lesnar as champion, and could go with Samoa Joe in the main event of Great Balls of Fire in a few weeks.

Joe interrupted Reigns promo, explaining that Reigns hsa never beat him. Reigns, acting heelish, dismissed, “that guy named Joe,” downplaying his title shot, of course.

Later in the show, Reigns wrestled Joe 1-on-1, and Joe forced Reigns to tap in the Coquina Clutch after Braun Strowman returned, and distracted Reigns in the ring.

During the match, an ambulance pulled in to the arena — it was shown on the big screen — and Strowman walked out.

Now, Reigns will fight Strowman at Great Balls of Fire. And, it’s entirely possible that Reigns wins and goes on to SummerSlam. There, he could face Joe.

Or, it could be the complete opposite. Lesnar could win the title match, and Strowman could beat Reigns, hence earning Reigns self-declared title shot at SummerSlam.

I think that’s the way they ultimately go, but what the booking did last night – despite the absurdity of Reigns declaring himself No. 1 contender – did set in place some mystery. At least going into Great Balls of Fire, no one should know the result of the main event, whereas one week ago, I think everyone assumed Lesnar was walking out of Dallas as the champion.

Matt Hardy & Jeff Hardy beat Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson

It was strange to see this be nothing more than really a throwaway tag team match. A few months ago, before the Hardys returned to WWE, this would have been considered a dream match. Here, it just felt like it was there to fill time.

That doesn’t diminish the quality of the match. It was more the presentation of the match.

    Finn Balor beat Bo Dallas

Bo’s new look was pretty good. His hair was longer and he looked to be channeling more of a Bray Wyatt look. At first, I figured that they were maybe going to go in a new direction and put Bo and Curtis Axel with Bray, but instead, we learned later in the show that those two will be joining up with the Miz as his new entourage.

    Akira Tozawa beat TJP

This was another very strange presentation. I’m genuinely not sure if the Titus Brand are supposed to be babyfaces or heels. Tonight, they were babyfaces, I guess. We’ll see about next week.

    Samoa Joe beat Roman Reigns

It was revealed later in the night, that Reigns vs. Strowman at Great Balls of Fire will be an Ambulance Match. Strowman is a really strong character and I’d like to see them do more with him. With Reigns, it would most likely help him to take a little bit of a step back right now, in order to reset and maybe allow the fans to invest in him a little more. It’s not going to happen, because that’s not the way WWE operates, but it probably should happen.

Sheamus & Cesaro beat Titus O’Neill & Apollo Crews

Again, so the Titus Brand are babuyfaces tonight. Good to know! We’ll see what they are next week. Make sure you tune in to Monday Night Raw!

    Nia Jax beat Sasha Banks

There were some shenanigans here, of course. Alexa Bliss, Emma, Dana Brooke, Mickie James and then Bayley all got involved in some post-match business. The match seemed to be more here for an excuse for that post-match brawl than anything else.

Big Cass turned on Enzo Amore

This was the big hook of the show. All night, they were pumping up that we would find out who was attacking Enzo and Cass. As it turned out, Corey Graves had access to security footage from last week, and it showed that Cass faked his attack, kicking a box and then laying down in order to be discovered.

Cass admitted that he faked it, and also admitted that he attacked Enzo. Cass said he did it because he was sick of Enzo’s talk, with Cass always being the one that had to back him up. The segment ended with Cass giving Enzo a huge boot in the ring.

Cass really shined in this segment. He hasn’t been given a lot of promo time, because Enzo does so much of the team’s talking. But Cass delivered in a big way and this was a great start of his run as a heel. Enzo was great as well with his facial reactions and his disbelief that his partner was turning on him. They both sold the segment really, really well.

Closing the show with it also should tell you how important they feel Cass can be. You could tell from the very beginning that they were going to give him a run as a singles wrestler at some point, and the time for that is apparently now.

WWE Spoilers: Will Roman Reigns Face Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam?

Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar confront one another on ‘Raw.’ (YouTube)

Tonight on Monday Night Raw, Roman Reigns declared that at SummerSlam, he wants to face the Universal Champion, whomever it may be. So does this mean that the WWE is leading up to a match between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam?

Roman’s announcement came as a bit of a surprise, as it has been reported by the Wrestling Observer among other outlets that the WWE is planning to have Brock Lesnar face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 34. The reporting has been that the WWE was planning to save this matchup until WrestleMania in April 2018.

It’s possible that the WWE has changed its plans or that they are planning to have Roman face Lesnar at both SummerSlam and WrestleMania. However, what seems more likely is that Roman will not end up facing Lesnar at SummerSlam and that the match will be between Lesnar and Braun Strowman, as had been previously rumored.

After all, the WWE has reportedly been planning a matchup between Braun Strowman and Brock Lesnar for months, with the original plan being for them to face at Great Balls of Fire. However, this had to be delayed when Strowman was legitimately injured, resulting in the Samoa Joe matchup. Lesnar is expected to defeat Joe, and Strowman has now been cleared to return, according to Bleacher Report.

But keep in mind what within the WWE storyline, Braun Strowman is supposed to be out on injury for six full months, so he would not be a factor in Roman’s plan right now. With that in mind, one possibility for the direction of this storyline is that Roman will set his sights on the Universal Championship over the next few weeks, but sometime between now and August, Braun Strowman will return. He will make the argument that he’s the one who deserves to be number one contender, and Kurt Angle will place the two of them in a number one contender match. Strowman will win, resulting in the Lesnar vs. Strowman matchup at SummerSlam.

Lesnar is expected to retain the title at SummerSlam, and from there, he will reportedly only defend his title a few more times over the ensuing months, with his opponents being Seth Rollins, Finn Balor, and finally Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 34.

WWE Rumors: Who Will Face Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam 2017?

    MMA: UFC 200-Lesnar vs Hunt

Brock Lesnar will put his WWE Universal Championship title on the line against Samoa Joe next month on July 9. Fans, however, expect Lesnar to have little to no problems keeping his title belt, and they are already looking forward to the SummerSlam 2017 main event.

Very few of WWE’s “Monday Night Raw” regulars have a shot at taking down Brock Lesnar, and among this handful, just two wrestlers stand out as a good challenge for the Beast Incarnate.

It could be Braun Strowman, if not Finn Balor, who will be facing Lesnar for the Universal Championship title in the SummerSlam 2017 event. One of the biggest WWE show coming up for the remainder of the year, SummerSlam this year will be held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Aug. 20, according to the International Business Times.

Other stars aside from Strowman and Balor are also in the running for a match with Lesnar. Booking conflicts, however, mark them as unlikely contenders. Seth Rollins, for example, will likely be facing off against Bray Wyatt instead at the August event.

Rollins may have another chance for a match with Lesnar at the upcoming Survivor Series, or even at the Royal Rumble event. For the SummerSlam 2017 event, however, it could be Strowman or Balor in the ring with the title holder.

Strowman’s chances for a bout with Lesnar rests with his injury status, according to Cageside Seats. If he is cleared to fight after his recent elbow surgery, the Monster will be able to challenge Lesnar in time for SummerSlam.

Reports currently disagree on Strowman’s availability, however, with Pro Wrestling Sheet editor Ryan Satin posting on Twitter that Braun has not been cleared to come back to the ring.

Other sources, however, agree that Strowman has been recently cleared to return to wrestling, as bolstered by a report from PWInsider.

WWE SummerSlam 2017: Speculation On Roman Reigns’ SummerSlam Announcement

Speculation On Roman Reigns' SummerSlam Announcement

It was announced by WWE that Roman Reigns would be making a SummerSlam announcement on the upcoming episode of RAW on Monday night.

Dave Meltzer discussed this topic on today’s installment of Wrestling Observer Radio. While Meltzer couldn’t confirm exactly what the announcement is, he presented a scenario that would see Reigns challenge the winner of the Great Balls of Fire match between Brock Lesnar vs. Samoa Joe.

Meltzer would go on to speculated that somehow WWE would do an angle that would setup Reigns vs. Strowman before the SummerSlam event (possibly on RAW or Great Balls of Fire), with the winner of that match facing Lesnar. Strowman would defeat Reigns and move onto the SummerSlam match against Brock for WWE Universal Championship.
